Dancing with the Cows, my Farmer’s way

I feel it is time for a funny story. Since my Farmer has not done anything stupid funny lately, I pulled up my notes I keep on things to blog about and I found this story. I wrote it a few years back, after we lost our dog and before we got the current one, but never published it. As I was reading it, I found myself laughing and figured if it made me laugh, maybe it would make somebody else laugh.  Yes, it is making fun of my Farmer, and he will probably not like hearing about it from his friends, SO DON’T TELL HIM!! (Ahhh what the heck, go ahead and tell him. It was funny.) Here’s the story as I wrote it back then…..

Pete

Good ol’ Pete

Some days my Farmer really makes me laugh. Lately it’s been every day when we feed cows. Let me explain. About two months ago we lost our cow dog, Pete. One of Pete’s jobs was keeping the cows away from the hay on the wagon as we fed. We have a few cows that feel that it is their job to see if they can rub the hay bales off the wagon before my Farmer gets them fed off. Pete would ride the wagon and bark at the cows to keep them away; or he would run beside the tractor and wagon keeping them away. Well, without ol’ Pete around, the cows have become much more aggressive at attacking the hay on the wagon , which really irritates my Farmer. He now has to keep the cows away from the hay himself.

Now remember, my job as the driver is to keep an eye on the wagon at all times and to stop if I need to for some reason, say my Farmer jumps off or something. Sooo, as we enter the field, I’m watching in my rearview mirror.  Everything is good at one glance, then I glance again and I can’t see my Farmer. I start to stop because I thought I saw arms waving, thinking he was signaling me to stop. Then I pay a little closer attention and see that my Farmer is definitely waving his hands….but not at me

Here’s the sight I see from my tractor……. my Farmer off of the wagon, swinging his arms, running from one side of the wagon to the other, chasing the cows. Kind of like ol’ Pete did. Only Pete barked and nipped at the cows tails. I don’t think my Farmer was barking or nipping, but I do believe he was yelling, which I suppose can be classified as barking.  (and I know barking, remember! ha!) Believe me, sitting in that tractor seat looking in the rearview mirror, it was a pretty comical sight. Of course I did not let my Farmer know I was laughing at him.  But I was.

The last couple of days my Farmer hasn’t gotten off to dance around the wagon. He stays on it.   He has started carrying a stick though, and runs from end to end and side to side, swinging the stick rather aggressively. Not as comical, but still a pretty funny sight. I do believe he’s been barking shouting many unfriendly words at the cows, I can just faintly hear something in the tractor. Yep, my Farmer does make me laugh. However, laughing, he is not.

Like I said, this happened a while back. We now have two dogs to keep the cows away from the feed wagon. It makes my Farmer a bit happier that the cows don’t get the hay off the wagon. A little boring for me in the tractor to watch, however.   But it’s more important to have a happy Farmer, I suppose. Without a happy Farmer, Livin’ the Life, the Farm Life that is, would not be as enjoyable.
