What’s best? The Smell of Fresh cut hay or Fresh plowed soil.

The results are in! Did you vote in my poll? I posted it last week on my Facebook page…just for fun and for something different to do. The question was which do you like better…the smell of fresh mowed hay or flesh plowed dirt. After I posted it, I got to thinking about the wording and wondered…if I had used different words, would it have made a difference in the vote?

Soil vs Dirt

I should have used the word soil instead of dirt. After all, as my Farmer’s grandfather would say, and I quote, “Soil is what you grow things in. Dirt is what you wash off of your hands at the end of the day. Makes you think, doesn’t it.

Mowed vs mown vs cut

The 2nd word I wondered about was the word mowed. I should have used the word cut. That word I am sure of…mowed I am not. Is the correct usage of that word mowed or should it be mown? I really don’t know and when I looked it up, it just confused me more. The word cut is…shall we say…cut and dry. Ha!! Like hay gets!!

Wording, a lot of times, will play a role in how we imagine something. Do you imagine a better smell from when I say soil as from when I say dirt? Does the image of fresh cut hay smell better than if the hay is fleshly mowed? Or if it’s freshly mown hay? Dang, that just really confuses me! ANYWAYS…………..

Spring vs Summer

There were a lot of poll takers that answered “both”. This got me thinking. (I know…again) Does ones answer depend on whether they like one season versus another? Dirt, or soil, seems to represent spring or even fall. Fresh mowed (or mown) hay or cut hay seems to represent summer. What do you think? Does it? Did your favorite season coincide with your answer?
Wow, I really did not intend this simple post to cause this much thinking! But that’s how I am. I tend to over think things and have a tendency to worry if it’s right or wrong and that leads to crazy thinking. But that’s how I am.
Now, before I give you the official poll results, I will share my answer.

My VOTE!!

I vote hay. I like summer…and I love the smell of fresh cut hay. Even grass for that matter. I even like the smell of the hay as it drys. Unless I am anemic. Then I like dirt…literally. I read that the more anemic you are, the more you crave dirt. I’m guessing it’s a natural instinct that your body is telling you it needs iron. Maybe? I’m no expert, I just know what I read. Yes, I read it on the internet so it’s TRUE! 😉😁 So, there you have my vote, both, it all depends. Ha!!

The RESULTS!!!

Hay!! It won hands down.
Dirt came in second with “both” right behind it.

There were a few write-in’s. Potato cellar dirt. Now this is dirt. And I too love the smell of potato cellar dirt. I suppose it is probably an acquired smell. I’m sure not everyone has had the “privilege” to ever smell a potato cellar. If you have spent time in one, you know and always remember the smell and the feel of a spud cellar.
These was also a vote for pizza. Ya, there is always a smarty pants in the group. But that’s Ok. We love those smarty pants people too. Except for now that pizza was mentioned, I can smell it and now I am craving it! Pizza is now what’s for dinner!

Thanks to everyone for playing along with my poll, AND for reading this post as I rattled on about my crazy, weird thoughts. I feel better now sharing them. 🙂 You all are the best! If you missed my poll, please comment below with your vote! Who knows, your vote could swing the results in the other direction!! I’ve seen it done before. 😉
That’s all my thoughts for now. I know I will have more as I continue Livin’ the Life, the Farm Life that is. So make sure you stop back in! Or better yet, subscribe and also follow on my social media sights! Thanks again!
